One of the

Country's Best

Blake Bradbury:  12-year-old ace pitcher
for Houston Express, a select baseball team.

It isn't that Blake Bradbury, the fireballer, is just a good baseball pitcher. He's a great baseball pitcher. He's also a great batter, a great third baseman and an exceptionally great teammate.

Blake, just 12 years old, has the look, build and maturity of a kid several years older and is the only player from. Fort Bend County on the Houston Express, a Houston select baseball team from the Baseball USA league that draws the best players within the borders of the nation's fourth largest city.

It's not just Blake's family and teammates who think he's exceptional in all aspects of the game.  Blake's coach and manager marvel at his skill and maturity for a kid not even in his teens or old enough to shave.

"Blake is one of the dominating pitchers in this nation, in his age group," said Hill Dishman, general manager of the Houston Express. "We have played the top teams in the nation over the last two years and when we must have a win, Blake is on the mound. His performance in big games is remarkable."

Armed and dangerous, when Blake's on the mound he keeps his hitters guessing. Two-seam fastball, four-seam fastball, curve ball, knuckle ball...who knows? "His fastball has been clocked at over 70 miles per hour and he has great off speed pitches," said Dishman. "To have that kind of speed, at his age, with a curve ball that you can throw for strikes, makes him extremely difficult to hit.

Besides being a great pitcher, he is a good infielder, normally playing third base. He usually bats second in the line up and hits with power. He is one of the top home run hitters on the team.."

To keep his pitching skills in top form, Blake's dad, Gary, and morn, Debbie built a fenced-in pitching mound and backstop in their back yard in Sienna Plantation. The whole family is pretty serious about the game tracking statistics, never missing a game and being their son's biggest fans, but not to the point of being fanatical. They make sure Blake is having fun. It's a top priority.

"We have always allowed Blake to make his own decisions (regarding his participation in sports)," said Gary Bradbury. "We have encouraged him to go with his heart and that if he ever stops having fun, then it's time to get out and try something else."

Playing about 100 or so games a year and spending about 20 hours a week in practice, Blake never tires of the game or looses his enthusiasm. What really sets this polite, yet fiercely competitive athlete apart from the thousands of kids that play baseball every summer is his attitude.

"His mental approach to the game is phenomenal," said Dishman. "He never lets the pressure get to him. Just watching him on the mound, you wouldn't know if Blake was pitching with a 10 run lead, or if the game was tied and the other team has the bases loaded in the last inning. Blake is so mature for his age and he somehow never gets frustrated. When the game is going on he is extremely focused; however, when the game is over, it's over. We've seen other great players carry with them a rather large ego, but not Blake. He'll be the first one on the team to compliment a teammate."

According to Blake, the secret to his baseball success as well as success in all aspects of his life is staying calm and focused. "Not losing it (composure) is what gets me ahead," said Blake.

All this time devoted to baseball and yet Blake finds the extra hours to be on his seventh grade football team at Lake Olympia Middle School. Blake is not just "on" the team. He plays quarterback on the school's A team. "I love playing football, but not more than baseball," said Blake. And after playing two demanding sports he finds time to study enough to make the grades that get him on the honor roll. Blake plans to continue playing baseball and having fun doing so. He'd like to play high school baseball at Elkins High School in two years, followed by college ball while studying to be a veterinarian. From the sandlot to a professional lot under the dome, Blake's coach isn't ruling out a chance with the pros.

"I think Blake's future depends on Blake," said Todd Mucha, coach of the Houston Express. "He certainly has everything going for him at this age, but only time will tell. However, I wouldn't bet against him."
